"This year's final four again proves just how evenly matched this whole season was, especially in the MPSF," said assistant coach Jay Hosack. "It was a year where anyone could beat anyone at any time. We faced Cal State Northridge earlier this season in the midst of a few weeks of tough travel for us. I think they are a great matchup for our team in the tournament. We're going to be fresh and we've had a great few weeks of practice to prepare. I think Stanford is the team of destiny this year. They're hosting and have some great motivation. However, I think it's truly anyone's game."
Penn State has faced the Buckeyes three times this season and are 2-1 overall. The Lions defeated OSU 3-1 in their final match at the Hawaii Outrigger Invitational and swept the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio on March 3. The teams met a third time at Rec Hall on Sunday, March 21 with Ohio State coming out on top, 3-1. The Lions are 64-23 against the Buckeyes with a 5-1 lead in the NCAA tournament. The last NCAA meeting was a Penn State win in the 2008 semifinals in Irvine, Calif.
The Nittany Lions lead the series with Stanford 5-2 and have never met in the NCAA Tournament. The teams last met in Springfield's Hall of Fame Classic on Feb. 11, 2006 with the Lions winning, 3-0 (30-22, 30-26, 30-25).
