Tryout information has been posted for 2010 Empires in Buffalo. First date is May 16th @ Naz.
New this year, everyone must pre-register online prior to the May 16th tryout.

There may be a slight drop off in this year's play; because of the ESG layoff, but that won't be long. ESG is self replicating, all those athletes, their families, their friends and then the newspapers and the NY sport fans. It creates its own market.
Now, whether or not, there is competition for our men's squad is another matter. Some regions in NY still have only fledgeling men's volleyball programs, so some regions are not greatly competitive in volleyball, even with the advent of the growth of many d3 programs.
There is a little more parity in the women's game, so the competition is stiffer. As most people know women's volleyball is either 2nd or 3rd in the hierarchy of collegiate scholarships, with basketball and track. So across NY there are many more women with playing desires, purposes, pursuing scholarships and futures as athletes.
Still and all, the Buffalo volleyball hotbed pioneered by Joe Gillespie and Sally Kus in the 70s & the Rochester volleyball hotbed, pioneered by Charles Michlin, and then furthered by Cal Wickens in the 80s, still will more than likely create successful junior and adult teams.
Whether or not, the ESG volleyball tourneys will be competitive for our local men, though, is another matter. |
