..."only 23 kids tried out this year"..., maybe what Mike said back on 7/7 factors in here. If the tryouts for the Empire state games weren't advertised to the high school communities, and among all club teams, it seems that would affect the amount of kids who would try out right? Not to fault just the coach of the Empire games, because not sure who is responsible for getting the word out in the volleyball community about tryouts. But if that information isn't disseminated appropriately, numbers for tryouts would obviously be lower. Not to take anything away from the kids who placed 5th on the National team, but there are lots of great volleyball players in the community! Best of luck to those who will represent the Western Region, as well as all the teams participating.
Anyone know who is responsible for promoting the tryouts? How does the word get out to the volleyball players in our community about tryouts, the process etc.? It is great that the Empire games are back, but one would hope the opportunity is there for all who want to try out, not just some.

I usually don't respond / post on these threads... mostly because it is usually misinformed posters bashing my decisions / actions. In this case, I make an exception... because the string can start to get nasty towards kids (think about it, posting why one kid didn't make it implies that another kid doesn't deserve to make it... and in the end it is all just uniformed opinion).

So... Sorry "VolleyPower" - no politics here.

• Shanahan - Probably the best MB in the region didn't tryout, she has camp at WI during the games.

• Litwin did tryout and is a tremendous player - love her game, her attitude and especially her personality! With ESGs only allowing 10 players (not 12 like we have requested for years) we can only take 2 DSs - hard to argue against Hathaway and Metzger as choices. [In light of the recent NBA circus - Even if Litwin was the equivalent of Lebron James, no need to debate this with Kobe and Dwayne Wade being selected.]

• Feldman did tryout also - wonderful kid and has a great vball IQ. Again, only 10 spots, 2-setters. Schirmer tops this class though (no politics - she had 5 DI scholarship offers based on size, physicality and natural ability - she is vball smart too and a 4.0 student). Same NBA reference here... but note, Dolan plays OH in HS and is more diverse in position play than either Schirmer or Feldman.

I know, I know... with 7 VFX kids it seems like politics... but it isn't... only 23 kids tried out this year. We took the top 10 based on numbers. It happens that those 7 VFX kids also finished 5th in the country as Juniors playing 18s. So they are pretty good in their own right and deserve the recognition to not be knocked as being political selections.

FWIW, in my opinion NFVB 17s had the best two players by position (and arguably 3 with a toss-up between Metzger and Hathaway as DS):

OH - Stoklosa is best by FAR... probably best player on this squad across all positions. She probably was #2 to Cushman in all ages this year in her position. She is a steal for Siena and will continue to dominate, especially seeing she will play all-the-way around on this team.

MB - Shanahan is best by FAR as well... unstoppable and dominant all year long. She chewed up Gordon and McGwin everytime we played her this year (ask them, they will agree). Sad that WI pulls her from the games, she would've put on a clinic at the games.

I hope this helps squash the "rumors" on the roster and brings the conversation to the excitement of the return of the games, or the push for this squad to continue the girls streak (a win this year will tie for 4th of overall streaks and is currently the longest running streak at the games), or the games being in our home region, or... any of the many GREAT things that these games are!

Good luck to all of the teams.

Rob

So, 7 kids from Rochester, all from VFX ( VolleyPower is right). Who do the 3 Buffalo kids play for?

Sorry for the error. My fault for overlooking the 2 year lapse in dates on this topic. But why would someone continue a thread from 2 years ago instead of starting a new one?!
jet Posted - 07/08/2010 : 7:08:57 PM
You mean this list? posted 2008? AS I see it no list has been posted on this thread from this year........but if people want to see the rosters yes they can see them on the website you listed.

Hopefully if the ESG can regain some of its importance back from the time of yore......hopefully yes we will in the future do a better job of posting times dates places of tryouts......but with that being said I thought the scholastic boys coaches and the network of email lists both HS and Club did as good a job as possible getting the info out to the boys.

Good luck to all.

Looks like lots of misinformation being posted regarding rosters for both men and women in all categories, if the Empire State Games website is correct. Just one example, because it's so obvious, not one player listed above, for the women's scholastic team, is on the actual ESG website scholastic roster. It's 10 entirely different players, 7 from Rochester, 3 from Buffalo. Site is www.empirestategames.org/summer.

21 players registered on-line to try out. Some didn't show up at all or cut themselves during the selection process for various reasons.
The Open Women roster looks like this:

Rachael Bowler
Miko Daluisio
Leah Hill
Stephanie Hopkins
Jerusha Iya
Lindsay Matikosh
Allie Nickel
Meryll Pentz
Lindsey Schlegel
Katherine Shea
