The difficulty in getting kids out these days for volleyball is growing. Yes, some schools don't have a problem but others do. As the trend for multiple sport athletes swings towards playing one sport year round the idea of "sharing athletes" fades away. Not to put a damper on the this summer league but is having volunteer coaches with little or no background in the sport the best way to start the kids out learning about the sport? The cost at over $100 a kid seems a bit high too. The Victor and PACE clubs do a nice job teaching the advanced skills to a subset of those playing volleyball in the area. For the rest, what is best? Once introduced to other sports (i.e. football, soccer, basketall, etc) in 4th, 5th, 6th grades, we've lost them. It would be a shame to see the volleyball programs in this area (Rochester) fade away due to low numbers or, with the current state/school funding problems, eliminated to save money.

USAV Revises Beach Age Groups for Domestic Junior Events
B.J. Hoeptner Evans March 11, 2010

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 11, 2010) – The USA Volleyball Board of Directors has approved a change in the definitions of age groups for junior beach volleyball players competing in regional and national events to put them in line with those for indoor players.

Effective immediately, the beach age group definitions will be based on the player’s age as of Sept. 1. These definitions will be used for the 2010 USA Beach Junior Tour.

The new definitions are:

12 and Under: Born on or after Sept 1, 1997
14 and Under: Born on or after Sept 1, 1995
16 and Under: Born on or after Sept. 1, 1993
18 and Under: Born on or after Sept 1, 1991
20 and Under: Born on or after Sept 1, 1989

The member regions of USA Volleyball were unanimous in their support of the change. The AAU as well as affiliated beach organizations are also making this change so the age categories will be consistent throughout the country.

“The rationale is that the change would reduce the confusion and simplify the process of transitioning from the indoor scene to the outdoor scene for our junior players,” said Florida Region Executive Director Steve Bishop in support of the measure. “Not to mention the fact that the kids could compete together with the same athletes from their indoor teams.”

The age group definitions for international beach and other beach high performance programs and events are keeping a Jan. 1 definition, which is in line with FIVB regulations:

A2-U26: Born in 1985, 1986, or 1987
A2-U23: Born in 1988 or 1989
Junior-U21: Born in 1990 or 1991
Youth-U19: Born in 1992 or 1993
Select-U17: Born in 1994 and after

Armory was warmer than I remember, although I guess the warmth outside is what led to the leak onto court 1. At least it waited until playoffs were well underway.

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 03/09/2010 at 11:15:42 AM by Kingofthehill
Quote:
Phil is a great coach and a great guy. He is knowledgable, communicates well, and will no doubt do well with the kids. When Phil was setting for my team against the Behrend boys back in a tournament in December, I could tell he already had a good relationship with them and had to hold back coaching them through the net.

When talking with Phil about his recruiting for girls, his initial comment about recruiting outside of PA was the considerable price difference. However, with girls, the market is saturated with players and places to play. With boys, the number of D3 programs pale in comparison. So maybe another opportunity locally will draw some players. I can say that any person who plays under Phil will learn a great deal.

There are a couple of schools through the Penn-Ohio Club league that could turn D3 varsity and be very successful, Grove City being one (I'm biased). In the article it mentioned that Theil moved their club team to Varsity level. Must be something new going on there, because Theil used to be awful in club. Many of the schools in that league are varsity D1 or D2 (Pitt, Duquesne, IUP, Gannon)...

Anyway, congrats to Phil.
