Hey everyone, There will be a youth summer league this year in Rochester!!! This is not a club, but a league similar to house soccer for ages 7-15. The league is run through the United States Youth Volleyball League (www.usyvl.org). Start spreading the word. We are in the process of getting approval from districts to distribute flyers in the schools. All information and registration can be found on the website.
Like any house league, this is a volunteer organization. This means that people need to volunteer to coach these teams. The league has a strict curriculum that coaches must follow and each coach will be trained by our local coaching director on how to teach the skills to players at the different levels.
Questions can be asked through this forum ,through the website above or to Chris Passamonte (christopher.passamonte@greece.k12.ny.us).

Chris,
Would you expand a bit on your upcoming summer league. Coed? Inside (Hilton HS Gym) or Outside? Who will be coaching?

I coach for Victor and I am the director of the Victor Volleyball Club. I would like more info on who is coaching and what the main focus is before I ask my kids to join. Is the main focus of this leauge for the indoor game or the outdoor game? In my eyes they are two different sports. You can email me @ jake@victorvolleyballclub.com

the league is for learning basic introductory to intermediate volleyball skills and to promote the sport at an early age. basic strategy that Most coaches will not have a large knowledge base if any of the sport. This is why there is a specific curriculum outlined week by week for them to follow.
the following link outlines the league:

| I think the idea in having a summer league is great, especially to get the kids interested at an early age. The difficulty in getting kids out these days for volleyball is growing. Yes, some schools don't have a problem but others do. As the trend for multiple sport athletes swings towards playing one sport year round the idea of "sharing athletes" fades away. Not to put a damper on the this summer league but is having volunteer coaches with little or no background in the sport the best way to start the kids out learning about the sport? The cost at over $100 a kid seems a bit high too. The Victor and PACE clubs do a nice job teaching the advanced skills to a subset of those playing volleyball in the area. For the rest, what is best? Once introduced to other sports (i.e. football, soccer, basketall, etc) in 4th, 5th, 6th grades, we've lost them. It would be a shame to see the volleyball programs in this area (Rochester) fade away due to low numbers or, with the current state/school funding problems, eliminated to save money. |

What makes other sports (soccer, football, baseball) in this area so successful is that they start kids playing at a young age in leagues, not small camps attended randomly throughout the year. Most of these program are run by volunteers who have little or no prior knowledge of the sport. Having parents as coaches helps to ensure that the experience is enjoyable for their child. I know I don't want my kids playing for some "guru" of a sport if they are not going to make it enjoyable for them when they are 5, 7, 8,etc years old. One experience that they are not having fun at and they don't want to go back. I just want children under the age of 10 or 12 (when most clubs start their teams) to be exposed to this sport before or in place of those other popular sports. |
