COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 31, 2007) – Adult beach volleyball players can celebrate the final weekend of summer at the 2007 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball presented by Corona Extra on Sept. 21-23 in Huntington Beach, Calif.
USA Volleyball and three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly have announced that registration is open for the tournament, which is available to all players 18 and over who are not currently in high school.
Sanctioned by USA Volleyball and produced by The Elevation Group, the inaugural U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball is expected to draw more than 250 volleyball teams. Tournament play will take place in 15 different divisions, including draws for men, women and co-ed teams. In addition there are two divisions of masters’ categories for both men and women with one division for those players 37 and older and a second for those 45 and older.
“For years I have wanted to establish an event that would bring serious beach volleyball players together in Southern California, the birthplace of the sport, and thanks to USA Volleyball and Corona Extra that dream will become a reality this year,” Kiraly said. “Just as we did in the old days, the event will showcase the many faces of beach volleyball with men and women competing in two- and four-person teams. Our hope is that we will be able to bring this great game to more people with a nationwide grassroots approach.”
The winners of the women’s and men’s open divisions will receive $5,000. The winner of the co-ed open division gets $1,000. There will be various non-cash prizes for other winners.
“We’re enormously excited to be partnering with Karch and Corona Extra on this adult open championship,” said USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal. “We have every expectation that the event will grow in size and stature to rival those open championships held in other sports.”
All teams can register for the tournament online until midnight PDT on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Walk-up registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 at the on-site registration tent.
The cost to register is $60 per two-person team, $100 per two-person open team, $120 per four-person team. Registration includes an inaugural U.S. Open of Beach T-shirt.
