In the airport at Tucson after the HP Championships the asst coach for Stanford ask my daughter......so who is your favorite player? Your vball hero. She fumbled , squirmed abit and said I guess Karch Kiraly (really the only player she could think of)....or any other girls on the PSU team (good answer but!).
I knew that answer....virtually a blank was coming. Anyway I don't think I need to explain where I'm going with this but gee wiz I hope we have a boat load of young players "saying I want to be Reid Priddy, Lloy Ball, Stacy Sykora, Rich Lambourne ,Logan Tom, or Ogonna Nnamani. "
I remember pretending and dreaming this when I was young (Karch/Timmons/Aldis/Dusty.......and it was so important and fun!
From the looks of it we have outstanding teams indoor/beach going into the olympics and they should get lots of press time.

(Aug. 1, 2008) – On Aug. 7, ESPNU will televise (tape delayed) the final three matches from the FIVB (Federation of International Volleyball) World League, featuring the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team’s journey to its first FIVB World League title, which took place July 24-27, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

I grew up reading both Volleyball and Volleyball Monthly, they are both the same magazine now known as Volleyball Magazine, but i remember idolizing Keba Phipps and the Oden sisters. I grew up watching a lot of Beach/Indoor players locally. I still give the gift of a subscription to my nieces and nephews. The television exposure is great. I think the local connections we have need the publicity as well.
I think this Olympics will be different with the internet legitimately competing for the first time with television. If anybody gets HD Channels from Time-Warner the UNVHD channels also airs taped and live USA volleyball matches. |
