COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked and top-seeded Ohio State (15-10 overall) men’s volleyball team hit a season-high .547 in a 3-0 (30-22, 30-19, 30-25) sweep of fourth-seeded and 13th-ranked Loyola-Chicago (17-10) Thursday night in the MIVA semifinals held in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes advance to the championship match in St. John Arena at 7 p.m. Saturday against third-seeded Ball State (18-9), after the Cardinals upset second-seeded and 12th-ranked Lewis, 3-2 (27-30, 21-30, 30-25, 30-29, 15-12) in the first semifinal. OSU’s John Klanac posted a match-high 15 points with 14 kills (.500) and two assist blocks. Ted Schoenfeldt added 13.5 points with 11 kills (.550) and five assist blocks and Robbie Klein contributed 12 points with eight kills (.583), three ace serves and two assist blocks. Loyola-Chicago’s Kris Berzins collected a team-high 13 points with 12 kills (.333) and one ace serve. George Kamberos added 12 points with eight kills (.158) and four ace serves.
Ohio State opened game one with kills from Schoenfeldt, Klanac and Kevin Heine, a Rambler error and a Klein kill for a 5-0 lead. OSU expanded the lead to 10-4 before kills from Kamberos and Domenic Dewaele and two Kamberos ace serves cut the lead to two at 10-8. At 12-10, a Rambler error, a kill from Klein and a Heine solo block made it 15-10, OSU. After a Buckeye error made it 15-11, kills from Heine and Klanac made it 17-11. A Kamberos kill made it 17-12 before a Rambler error, an Albertson-Klanac block and an Albertson kill put the lead to eight at 20-12. A Buckeye error made it 20-13. A Klanac kill and a Loyola-Chicago error took the lead to nine at 22-13. The Buckeyes held a 28-18 lead before an OSU error, a Kamberos kill and two ace serves from Matt Baleiko cut the margin to six at 28-22. A Rambler error set game point at 29-22. A kill from Albertson ended the game at 30-22 for a 1-0 Ohio State lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .773 for the game to .207 for the Ramblers.
Kills from Berzins and Kamberos gave Loyola-Chicago a 2-0 lead in game two. At 5-3, Ramblers, kills from Albertson, Klanac and Klein gave Ohio State a 6-5 lead. Berzins tied the game at six with a kill. At 8-8, a kill from Klein, his ace serve and a Rambler error opened an 11-8 Ohio State lead. A Dewaele kill made it 11-9. Buckeye kills from Heine and Schoenfeldt, a Rambler error and a Klanac-Albertson-Schoenfeldt block gave Ohio State a 15-9 lead. At 16-10, a four-one Rambler run cut the Buckeye lead to three at 17-14. Errors by both teams, kills from Klein and Steven Kehoe and a Heine-Schoenfeldt block gave Ohio State a 21-15 lead. Errors by both teams made it 22-16. A kill from Klanac and two ace serves from Klein took the lead to nine at 25-16. An OSU error and a Heine-Schoenfeldt block made it 26-17. A kill from Berzins made it 26-18. Two Rambler errors made it 28-18. Loyola-Chicago, with a Dewaele-Nick Lamoureux-Mike Bunting block, made it 28-19. A Rambler error set game point at 29-19. Ohio State won the game, 30-19, with a Rambler error to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .455 for the game to .135 for Loyola-Chicago.
Tied at three in game three, an OSU error and a Dewaele ace serve made it 5-3 Ramblers. At 6-4, two Loyola-Chicago errors tied the game at six. Two OSU errors and two ace serves from Lamoureux gave the Ramblers a 10-6 lead. A Klanac kill and an Albertson ace serve made it 10-8. After a Berzins kill (11-8), a Kehoe-Heine-Klein block and a Rambler error cut the lead to one at 11-10. An OSU error made it 12-10 but kills from Klein and Heine tied the game at 12. At 18-18, a Heine-Schoenfeldt block and a Klanac kill gave the Buckeyes a 20-18 lead. A Buckeye error and two kills from Schoenfeldt made it 22-19. Bunting, with a kill, made it 22-20. Kills from Klanac and Albertson and an Anthony Hock ace serve opened a 25-20 Buckeye lead. An OSU error and kills from Schoenfeldt and Berzins made it 26-22. A Rambler error and a Kehoe-Albertson-Klein block made the lead six at 28-22. A Dewaele kill, a Lamoureux ace serve and a Buckeye error cut the lead to three at 28-25. Schoenfeldt stopped the Rambler run with a kill to set match point at 29-25. Albertson closed out the game with an ace serve for a 30-25 game win and a 3-0 sweep in the match. Ohio State hit .452 for the game to .167 for Loyola-Chicago.
For the match, Ohio State hit .547 to .167 for Loyola-Chicago. The Buckeyes had a 45-36 margin in kills and a 40-33 edge in assists. OSU’s Kehoe recorded a match-high 33 assists while Kyle Exline posted 20 and Michael Hutz, 11 for the Ramblers. Loyola-Chicago had a 12-7 margin in ace serves. Kamberos posted a match-high four for the Ramblers. Loyola-Chicago gave up 16 service errors to 13 for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Ohio State had a 28-24 advantage in digs with OSU’s Mike Berzins posting a match-high 12. At the net, the Buckeyes enjoyed a 10.5 to 1.5 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Heine had a match-high six total blocks with a solo and five assists. Schoenfeldt contributed five assist blocks for the Buckeyes.
