I read that the city had closed the Main Street Armory due to the lack of parking. Does this affect anyone in the volleyball world in the short term or long term?

There's a brief article in today's (7/15) on-line D&C; that says the Armory is closed for music concerts for at least 60 days because of neighbor complaints about "crowd control and security". It doesn't say anything about volleyball -- or parking either.

I'm wondering, because volleyball alone won't keep that place going. Does anyone know of any plans for a volleyball facility in Rochester similar to the BNCC in Buffalo? |

albee is right, there was a gucci mane concert a few weeks ago and there were numeroius fights which led to the armory closing for some extended time |

And it's the closing for extended time, even for just concerts (probably their biggest $$ maker?) that makes me worry about the future of that place. I don't know if you have noticed, but they really haven't put a dime into fixing that place up. Makes me believe that the place is not making a profit, even with concerts. I hope for the best, but should we be prepared for the worst? |

doubt it, it will be fine, the only reason it closed was because of the disorderly conduct during the concert, which they could obviously afford to do, or else they wouldtn have done it. i dont think theyre in any economic trouble at all. volleyball is one of the smaller facets of the variety of events that goes on there anyway. In my opinion, its not really a good place to play volleyball in the first place, the lighting is a little off, its cold during the winter, etc. it seems like a place built for concerts and huge events, not small sports tournaments

If I understand the story correctly, they volunteered to close down concerts for 60 days or risk being closed down by the city. This in no way implies economic stability, but the Armory trying to stay on the good side of city government. As far as it being not a good place for volleyball, if they corrected the lighting, the heat, and cleaned the place up, it would be just fine for vball. It is a beautiful thing when all 6 courts are full during one of the big tournaments, except for the lingering smell of pot, vomit, and who knows what else the day after a concert. |

Love that facility. Bad BAD parking and heat problems in the winter though. Roch. needs to find a way to keep that place rolling for Vball. However, vball is not the end all be all for that place. The need events in there I am sure. If they can't control the crowd that's bad news for us. I am from Buffalo and I love a place where we all can be like that. Hope the owners can get things together. If not, another blow to wny vball. Maybe roch. can get an RVC or a BNCC facility rolling. WE all need it.

I think though as the season went on they got a better handle on some of the major issues . They were not all solved ,but at least they were adressing them . It is a major work in progress . Unlike other facility's Like BNCC the armory is not a sports only facility . I do agree it is pretty amazing to see that place when all the courts are filled during the tournaments . I have been there on days after concerts and all those problems that were stated are very true . I have also been there after tournaments when the place looks pretty bad . I don't understand how kids ,coaches and parents can leave places looking like that . You know it's your water bottle and your food wrappers pick it up and put it in the trash . May not be a big deal but it doesn't help .

Just a few points---
I know from a fairly reliable source that a good amount of money was indeed put into "refurbing" the armory-if you will. Unfortunately it wasn't all direct cosmetic changes that all of us would notice. The lighting was adjusted some and the air system was also adjusted.
Remember what the original intent of the building was- an armory. So of course it's not ideal for volleyball. The super high ceilings make heating the place near impossible during the winter- well not impossible but incredibly costly.
Every volleyball club (including ours) has dreams of building a volleyball court facility. But unless you have another party that wants to run it as a business outside of the practice/tournament time your club will take up (like the BNCC) we all realize it's a far off dream. Investors would be needed, facility directors, advertising, people to fill it with bball/vball leagues during off seasons. So I don't know if there is actually a plan in the works. I've heard some people say that Rochester clubs should all get together and build one.
