According to the NCAA brackets:
SEMIS: 12/17 Minnesota (28-8 #11) v. Texas (28-1 #2) in Tampa at 7PM ET ESPN2/ESPN360.com
12/17 Penn State (36-0 #1) v. Hawaii (31-2 #12) in Tampa at 9PM ET ESPN2/ESPN360.com
FINALS: 12/19 ESPN2/ESPN 60.com 8PM ET
Check out the website for more information on bracket results: Binghamton and Niagara squeaked into the tournament only to be crushed by Penn State and Michigan respectively. Cinicinatti made it in too (Megan Turner/VFX/Wayne HS) but lost in the first round. Isn't Heather Henry on Hawaii? Am I missing someone from Coastal Carolina? Any other area players who made it to the tournament? http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/2009/ncaa_bracket_DI_volleyball_women.html

Hoser; Heather Henry went to North Carolina. Sam Palka went to Coastal
Nice comment from Russ Rose after the PSU / Cal match when he mentioned that Alysa Derrico was developed by a great club and quality coaches. Well done VFX |

She played very well last night. As Karch pointed out, she is a combination good passer and good defensive player which is hard to find. |

Rare to 2 person pass in this era of jump serving. Have to be very quick, agile and highly skilled. Kudos.
Boy, did I miss "life" in the commentary last night. I missed the effusive Marlow, the steadfast Sunderland or the yakky Gregory. At times the commentary was so, so slow.
I felt myself losing interest at times. & shoot, I'm an uber-fan. Should've cranked the tunes and cut the volume.
I think our sport needs some better play by play people. What does everyone else think? |

Agreed. Mowens is pretty much ESPN's staple play-by-play. Not sure why, I have no clue what her history is with the sport. I can only imagine Gus Johnson doing a volleyball match. I would watch anything he announces. When he does a March Madness game, it's awesome. Karch provides more black/white than color. His comments, to volleyball people, are fairly predictable. Unfortunately with volleyball being a lesser known sport, EVERY TIME I watch a match on ESPN they are educating just as much as commenting. For example:
Mowens: Back row attack called on Hawaii, point to Penn State. Karch: Yes Beth, it is illegal in the sport of volleyball for a player in the back row of rotation to attack a ball above the net while in front of the ten foot line.
Anyone who knows volleyball has to be getting somewhat tired of it- though I clearly understand its purpose.
Essentially, when watching Penn State in these years, you will hear essentially the same script about wins in a row, Hodge's hitting percentage, Glass was a hitter in high school, and Brown is 6'5". Fine, I understand, they are AWESOME. And if someone watches them for the first time, all that history is great.
I guess, yes, the in-depth, exciting commentary is missing. I wish there was more opportunity to telestrate--draw some x's and o's on the screen, and really show the deeper intricacies of the game.

Was I the only one frustrated by ESPN's over-reliance on that court-level "end zone" camera? You know...the one that made the team on the other side of the net look like it was playing in an adjacent gym. That shot made it virtually impossible (for me, anyway) to figure out what was happening at the net, and with Mowens and Kiraly often opting for commentary rather than play by play, I found myself sometimes having to wait for the scoreboard to change to figure out who won points at the net.
That said, it was a great final. I frankly thought PSU might be finished after going down 0-2, but they hung in there for a terrific comeback. Kudos to both teams for providing great entertainment. |

Well, 3 National Championships and 2 state titles. Her soph & Freshman years, I think Eden was Class C. BB didn't advance. |

Looking at Alyssa's college years in 3 years she has lost 2 matches, both the beginning of her Freshman year. Think about how impressive that run is |

Of course, you got to be good to play at that level on that team, but geez..it kind of helps to have people like Blair Brown and someone named Hodge on your team, not to mention all the other big studs they've had stomping around the PSU court.
BTW, you can't go with Sectional titles added to National Championships. It's state titles or nothing there. So from Jr year on, it was championships--though BB did lose to better schools those years as well during regular season. You might as well stop with Big Ten titles then, instead of National titles. 2 State titles, 3 National titles. Still pretty impressive. |

To lead a team of that caliber in digs and aces and be one of two primary passers is pretty cool. Couldn't be happier for her or her family. At the Happy Valley tournament last year she was engaging, gracious and entertaining as a site supervisor. She's a fine representative of what you ask an athlete to be. It's been a pleasure watching her grow into a friggin beast. And I mean watching her grow from the early 90's as a toddler coming to watch dad in a rec league in Batavia... a toddler passing and 'hitting' between games (they weren't called sets way back then). |

Actually, D'Errico won three state titles while at Byron-Bergen. Eden wasn't in Class C in 2004. BB beat Candor in 2004, Rhinebeck in '05 and Lansing in '06. I know because I covered all three state finals.
Over that time, BB went 66-1. Over D'Errico's first three years of college, Penn State is 110-2. So in her last six years of competitive volleyball representing a school, the teams that D'Errico has been on are 176-3, and she has three state titles and three NCAA championships.
Yes, it helps having Nicole Fawcett, Christa Harmotto, Megan Hodge, Alisha Glass, Blair Brown, Arielle Wilson, et.al. as teammates. But this year, D'Errico led the Nittany Lions in digs and was seventh in NCAA Division I in aces and was 11th in aces per set. And she was one of Penn State's four team captains. She is a LEADER and a WINNER and, most importantly, a TEAM player.
And BTW, she also received Academic All-Big Ten honors for the second year in a row. She is a terrific young woman who is a great role model. |

I have many girls on my team who have looked to Alyssa as a role model of who they want to be--as a student-athlete and ambassador of the game. Most (maybe none) will not quite achieve what she has (or will) on the vball court--I mean that's a tall order for anyone--but they aspire to approach the game the way she does. They could choose a lesser person to emulate, that's for sure. A number of them had the thrill of playing against her a little while ago, and that's all they could talk about: "Alyssa did this," "Alyssa did that." It's so important for kids in any arena to have people like that to light the way. Congrats to her and her family. |
