3 events in less than 2 months!!
The US Women are sure being given a chance to show their current abilities.
The Women’s Pan American Cup is a qualifying tournament into the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix and the 2009 Women’s Final Four. The top three NORCECA teams and top team from South America receive berths into next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix.
Following the Pan American Cup, USA will host the FIVB Women’s World Championship Qualifier, July 6-8 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. |

US women tromping through field so far. Word is that both the competition is weaker than Switzerland and that the US roster is stronger & that the video feeds are blurry and blurrier.
Last week only a few veterans were seeing some Pt (& getting roundly criticized by the critics...tough on Ogonna, Davis and Barboza). But Hugh and his staff were sticking to their guns and letting people show what they've got. Hugh, crazily, last week was also being criticized on chat threads.
Last week Nellie Spicer at setter, with Courtney Thompson at back up. This week Alisha Glass at setter, with CT there again. Heather Bown & Nancy Metcalf are back in the roster. Stacy Sykora at libero, attempting to change her passing methodology from Toshi's up down to the beach style of just forming the angles. Word is she is doing better with it than Davis (a pass with the ball in the midliner). & Foluke is getting her reps. Looking impressive w Bown & Harmotto. Jordan Larson getting it done, too. Kind of true of last weeks middles, too. Though. Barboza, from the press reports, is elevating her game.
June 18: USA def. Peru 27-25, 25-22, 25-17 (at Tijuana) June 19: USA def. Puerto Rico 25-13, 25-17, 25-14 (at Tijuana) June 20: USA def. Trinidad & Tobago 25-17, 25-9, 25-11 (at Rosarito) USA vs. Costa Rico tonight.
Will be curious to see what Hugh will do with the roster once the pool is completed & quality of opposition improves. Hard for the pundits, when the US is blowing people out, although the peru match wasn't lauded, perhaps because the video feeds have been blurry and blurrier. |

USA wins over Trinidad & Tobago in straight sets ROSARITO, Mexico, June 20, 2010 – USA crushed Trinidad & Tobago 25-17, 25-9, 25-11 in a Pool B match between unbeaten teams in the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup. The Americans stand at 3-0 while the Trinidadians are now at 2-1. Trinidad & Tobago had been the dark horse of the first round after claiming victories against the sides of Mexico and Costa Rica but this time they stumbled against a very powerful USA team. Jordan Larson paced USA with 10 points while Cynthia Barboza, Heather Bown and Christa Harmotto chipped in 9, 8 and 7 points respectively. Trinidadian Kelly-Anne Billingy scored a match-high 12 points and Krystle Esdelle added 8. “We are happy for winning this match in three sets,” USA’s Nancy Metcalf said after the match. “Trinidad is a very good team with good athletes and in the first set it was very hard for us to stop them, but fortunately we kept the match on our side of the net.” “We fought on the beginning with no fear,” said Esdelle the captain of Trinidad and Tobago. “We were fighting on the first set, but after that I don’t know what really happened to us”.
USA scores an easy victory over Puerto Rico TIJUANA, Mexico, June 19, 2010 – USA team improved its Pool B record to 2-0 following a straight-set easy victory (25-13, 25-17, 25-14) over Puerto Rico in Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup on Saturday. Megan Hodge, Foluke Akinradewo and Jordan Larson paced the winners’ offense with 13, 12 and 11 points respectively as USA outs blocked Puerto Rico 13-3. Tatiana Encarnación (13) and Sarai Alvarez (12) were the top scorers for the defeated side. “It is another step for us as a team,” USA Captain Nancy Metcalf said. “Our corners and middle players responded well against a good team like Puerto Rico.” “I am happy with today’s performance because different than yesterday, when we had a lot of ups and downs, we kept the consistency during the whole match.” Carlos Cardona, Coach of Puerto Rico said: “We were dominated at the net and their middle players did a good job complemented by their corners.” “We started well in each set but then they opened a gap and we couldn’t catch them,” Puerto Rican Vilmarie Mojica said. “We have a lot to improve as a team.”
USA overcome Peru in Pool B of Pan Am Cup TIJUANA, Mexico, June 18, 2010 – USA claimed a 27-25, 25-22, 25-17 victory over Peru in the opening match of the Ninth Women’s Pan American Cup. The winners had slow start but came back in the late part of the first set behind their solid blocking and dominated the rest of the way even though Peru never gave up. Veteran middle-blocker Heather Bown led USA with 14 points while Jordan Larson contributed 11 tallies. Foluke Akinradewo and Megan Hodge charted 10 apiece and Nancy Metcalf chipped in 8 points. Yulissa Zamudio topped Peru with 10 points and Jessenia Uceda and Leyla Chihuan tallied 8 points apiece. “After a slow start we settled down and started to play better,” Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon said. “We found a way to win the first set against a team of Peru that played good volleyball.” “We didn’t play our best volleyball but we are happy with the victory,” American Captain Metcalf said. “I am very proud of my teammates and I hope we keep improving during the tournament.” “Our poor reception and the high blocking of USA were the keys today”, Korean Choel Yong Kim said about his Peruvian side. “This is an important competition for us in preparation for the World Championship,” Chihuan said. “We recently toured Europe and played against France, Greece, Turkey and Russia and the team is in good shape. Our goal is to improve from the fifth place of last year.”

USA keeps unbeaten record in Pool B
ROSARITO, Mexico, June 21, 2010 – USA beat a Costa Rica team decimated by injuries in straight sets (25-11, 25-10, 25-2) for its fourth win without losses in Pool B of the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup.
Ogonna Nnamani laced 19 points to lead the winners while Foluke Akinradewo and Jordan Larson charted 13 and 12. The Americans totaled 15 blocks and had a 7-0 advantage in aces.
USA Coach Hugh McCutcheon said: “We knew that Costa Rica didn’t have their complete team, because they have a few more weapons, but despite the circumstances, they played hard and as best as they could with all their heart. We are happy to win this one”.
Costa Rican Verania Willis said: “We came to this tournament with half of our team, and the other half of the team at this time is out due to the injuries, but the girls who entered to this match tried to enjoy it and learn the experience of facing such a great team, like USA. They were good with us, because they didn’t play at their maximum”.
