I think we should have our annual discussion about stat keeping early this year. If we all can review the definitions of stats, especially blocks and digs it would be helpful.
Thanks!!! Witt

There is a copy of the NCAA Stat Manual on each coaches admin page.
To sum it up, if you are near the net when the ball crosses it, that is a block. If you call mine at any time, you are awarded a dig. I sure others can "help" with the rest of the stats.

What if you call "mine" and someone else passes the ball? That should be some sort of an assist, right?

Looking at the stat leaders I see that in large schools teams have had 38 digs in a three game match, 50 and 51 in a four game match. In small schools, 64 in a three game match and 88 in a 5 game match. And these are just the players that show up on the leader board. Do these numbers seem incredibly high to anyone else? Maybe I am tracking digs wrong? Or maybe who ever is doing stats for these teams is counting serve recieve as digs? I added my digs + serve recieves from last nights match and came close to these numbers. Also I looked back on some of the 3 game matches I have had and counted my teams total attacks. 32, 46, 45, 57, 63, 40, 54, 70, 60. An average of around 52 attacks per match. So if we attack 52 times and are dug 38 times that would leave 14 kills+misses!! |

The stats on the Section V website are wrong. Always have been and probably always will be. Coaches are at fault for either not knowing how to keep stats themselves or for not teaching kids what should count as a kill, a dig or a block.
This is yet another reason why volleyball is seen as a 2nd or 3rd tier sport. Ours is a sport that is better viewed and observed than seen through a stat sheet. Anyone involved with it or that KNOWS ANYTHING about the sport, laughs when they see some of these stats.
As fun and exciting as some of the local high school matches can be to watch, they are equally as frustrating to read about when such humorous stats are connected with them. So, we can continue to drive this issue into the ground or we can start erasing some of the silly stats from the Section V website that have already started to pop up this season. |

I agree I have had a match where my team had 67 attacks, 25 errors & 16 kills yet the stats from the team we played showed 54 digs for the players they listed on the site. Makes it tough to recognize the players that are actually getting the stats |

Wow, just saw the Small School stats and one school recorded 122 digs against another in a 5-set match. Assuming the other team did not record any kills during the 5 sets (not likely), they would have had 24.4 attacks per set on average at worst.
Voice, time to get your censor stamp out that says "VOID!".
