Now, i'm not just saying this because I play volleyball for Rush-Henrietta, but this year's varsity squad will be tough to beat this year. With a new coach and great players, this team will be one team to watch out for this season. Look out for these girls^

I would deffinetly not say that w/ tut leaving R-H is gonna be a better team. Tut was a great coach at R-H and had some great seasons. I think mor ethen anything w/ tut leaving that program,it probably just went down a little. But anyways who does R-H have this year, I remember playing them last year and I didnt see any outstanding play? Where did this talent come from? Fairport returns 5 of 6 starters and this is a team that made it to the finals last year. Also brockport was real young last year and should be a great team this year. A team tolookoutfor this year I think is Penfield, They have some 2 or 3 players that play very well.

I am glad to see the optimism and confidence, but lets not carried away, losing Tut is a major blow to the program. Who was the coach when they won over 100 straight matches? Now getting a rookie varsity coach is an improvement? Maybe, maybe not. What players are coming back? Who is the JV coach? Well good luck for the season.

Coach Joe Bellanca is the new Varsity coach, he has done JV for the last 2 years at RH for boys and girls, and he coached at Penfield for a few years. I have a lot of confidence in bellanca, 1 becasue i have played for him in the past, and 2 because i have seen him coach and he is a great coach, he took penfields boy to an unbeaten season, and he has taken the RH boys JV team to an 11-7 and a 17-4 season. He has an unbelievable winning record as a coach, and i think he will tyake this strong varsity team pretty far, but lemme know what u think??

Simple as this... When was the last time you saw JV in the paper? Never, the W-L record on JV is the most over-rated aspect of a program. JV is there to get players ready for varsity and the varsity system. I have seen most of the coaches from R-H throughout the years and he is an example of one of the good coaches that has been there. He will do a great job I am sure, but losing Tuttle is definitely not a blessing. Both are good coaches, and I wish R-H well. Seems expectations are high, thats always a good thing. Who is the JV coach this year?

Interesting this talk about Rush Henrietta. It is nice that the girls have confidence in their new coach. Confidence creates a wonderful strength. It is sad, however, that John is no longer at Rush. When people talk about the most talented and successful volleyball coaches in Rochester, John is usually considered among that group. A true gentlemen, it is sad to read some of this, because this situation has already hurt him enough. Turnover, however, is a reality in sports. There are always people in the wings, waiting for a chance to shine. Along with John, it is rumored that Scott Majka (Webster's highly successful coach of the past few years) has also moved on, Webster may have 2 new varsity coaches. At Brockport, last year's champions, a new coach (a Cheetah coach)is also being ushered in. The same is true at Spencerport (their highly successful boys coach takes over the girls), Mendon, Hilton (the arrival of the stork to last season's coach has brought the former JV coach to the fore), and Eastridge. There may be more that I am not aware of. In fact, luckily, Tut will taking up the reigns at Mendon. So, we're lucky, that we will still benefit from John's ability to develop and create strong programs. Seems like a good time to step into the arena for a young varsity coach. It is always an exciting time to see what happens when change occurs, young coaches will grow as they learn from their successes and mistakes. There are going to be a lot of changes occuring, or will there? Which teams will be successful? Some coaches churn out successful season after successful season, some are blessed with many club players, some are not. I'm an NBA fan too, I greatly enjoyed what developing coach, Byron Scott did with the Nets last year (young coaches can be successful), but I think I was equally pleased with Nelly's feats with the Mavericks. Don Nelson had been counted down and out, and then lo and behold, success again. Experience, after all, at creating success and dealing with the task of being a head coach, does yield rewards. 2 coaches that are successful, year after year, are Jeff Hibbard at Arcadia (for many years Jeff had few or none club players and created successful season after successful season)and Jim Vanderhoff at Gates (Christy Gustafson, our only jr. empire western team respresentative is in her senior year). While it is true they both suffered from massive graduations last year, Never count them out. However they start, they will get better and better and better. Several schools possess a large quantity of proven players and will have highly successful seasons (Fairport, Brockport, Penfield, Sutherland, Hilton, West Irondequoit - maybe some of their coaches helped create this talent?), so their coaches will accept the added (enjoyable) pressure of high expectations. A role that it appears that Rush is also eager to take upon. Cool, it is great to set goals and work to achieve them. For several years, Rush carried a remarkable, undefeated legacy: John came in on the 2nd year of this phenomenom and continued it past the graduation of all of his predecessor's proteges. Time will tell, if we will say the same about this new crop of coaches. At the very least, it will be fun seeing what happens. And from what we read, Joe Bellanca is off to a good start, he has kids who believe in themselves and in him. It should be fun to see what develops.

okay, well i'm glad you think Tut was a great influence on the v-ball program, but the girls on his team did not enjoy him as a coach or a leader. he was not a coach, he just sat back and watch his team lose. He never actually coached during practices, he just had them scrimmage and that was it! even the girls he pulled up for the sectional game, yes i say game b/c they lost in the first round! said that they hated the practices b/c they didn't do anything. Joe is an outstanding coach and leader and he brought the Penfield girls team to a great season, many a times and the boys as well. He is out to win and he works his girls, on the Jv team which is the same girls that will be playing on his varsity team, they were 13-4, so this group of ladies playing this year are a strong bunch. and they get a long, something that R-H hasn't had in a while. The players all have conflicts on the team ,but this year's team gets along and they can actually play with eachother and not bitch about stupid ass little things that stop greatness from occuring. I guess we'll just see on November 20th when R-H plays in the lovely three way scrimmage that happens every year. Yes and Fairport and Brockport will btoh be strong teams this year and great competition for R-H!

A few questions for the R-H Girls. What was the varsity record last year? JV record? Any key additions or people that are not coming out for the team this year? Predictions for this year? The most over-rated aspect of sports is the coach. A bad coach can work negatively to hurt a team, but coaches are given far too much credit and far too much blame. If a team is confident in their coach then that is a plus for that team, but will it be the difference between a mediocre season and sectional finals? Probably not. Optimism is a good way to start the season, but it will be interesting to see how a young coach handles adveristy. And every season has adversity.

Big Guy, your posts are usually pretty decent, but you are entirely missing the boat to say that coaching is the most over-rated part of sport. What makes mediocre players better ? If the players are already good when they get to varsity, were they just born that way ? Or did the JV COACH, or club COACH have something to do with it ? Is a coach only someone who knows x's and o's, or is the coach a communicator, a role model, a teacher, a disciplinarian, a listener, and even sometimes a friend ? I would say that almost every athlete I know will give a lot of credit for their level of success, be it a high level or a low one, to some coach they have had at some point. Coaching is wonderful, and should NEVER overshadow the accomplishments of the athletes that work so hard, but who is it making them work hard ? Usually a coach. Coaching is just as important an aspect of any game as playing. The offense and defense are usually designed by the coaching staff. Preparing in practice for teams the coaching staff have scouted is a big part of being successful. All coaches will give their players full credit for a team's success, as they should, but coaching cannot be called over-rated.

you are very right otter!, the coach coming up for gilrs this year to varsity is a coach that not only do i look up to on the court, but i also look up to as a role model, Coach bellanca is a great coach who always pushes his players to work harder, but also knows when it is a good time to have fun, they get a lot of work done, andhe understands the game and many strategies better than any coach i have ever had, or played against. He is always a positive thinker, and never settles for something like"just get the ball over the net". He encourages his teams to go out and play tough, every single point. One thing that bellanca does, that many other coaches dont, is he spends practice time, working on enthusiasm, and making the girls and guys that he coaches want to win, and that is a key point, because to me, volleyball is 90%mental game, if you go out there and want to win, and u play like u want to win, you will most likely win. So, i have confidense that this year will turn out to be a great season for the girls Varsity team at RH because there is a lot of skill comin inthis year, and the coachin is superb, gl all!!

ok well i dont know who vball14 is but u need to shut the hell up cause u ovouisly dont know a thing about tut, he lead his girls team to many great seasons and some decent and some we wont talk about but the thing is the coach doesnt make the team the players is what makes the team the coach is only there to coach, teach, and learn my opinion is that rh wont change maybe some but all i really want to say is RH will be losing a big part of there program and then some to replace that but they will never see such talent rise and be blown out the door like a fart in the wind so when the time comes everyones opinions will change through out the season so dont talk like u know tut cause u dont and cant say a thing about him

Brockport came out on top last year and will be a contender this year. The new coach will benefit from Lisa Jackson's continued support as assistant coach. She's been with the girls and knows what they're capable of. I expect a lot of great games from these Brockport girls!!!!

I realize Bellanca is a great coach, but don't post things on this website that you will regret later. I find it funny that the R-H players have high hopes, just like during the boys season. Going into sectionals I recall several posts about how they are a serious contender, then they lost in the first round. I realize Bellanca is a great coach, but don't post thinks on this website that you will regret later. I realize Bellanca is a great coach and R-H could be great this year. But don't post things on this website that you will regret later.

You must be from either Brockport, Fairport or something....it doesnt matter....you have totally missed the boat on the RH post...but that is not your point......You are just trying to stir up some ill-mannered insult. To try and say someone is not a good coach is like trying to recapture some old glory you never got in your career. Put yourself in Bellanca's shoes and then tell me how it is..... This should be a site about interest...not takedowns and sheap shots.....tell us how Bellanca scorned you or showed you personally how he sucked......then we have a discusion. Q
Otter---->you rule, by the way........do I know you?

Well, I see a lot of new faces coaching this year. I am jealous that Tut is now at Mendon. Everything he touches does well. Sutherland has some decent kids on their team. Their setter is a senior and Drew has done a tremendous job turning Sutherland into a contender. I think it's hard to say who the perennial powers are since a lot of teams are going through some kind of transition.
But if I had to pick today I would say that the teams to watch are going to be Brockport, R-H, Fairport, and W-Schroeder for the large schools. Sutherland, Brighton, Spencerport, and Arcadia for the Small Schools. I wouldn't count out Gates-Chili or Penfield. Expect Mendon to improve and give teams a run for their money.
Good Luck to everybody.

I used to play with a guy named Q, but since these usernames are pretty anonymous, I am not sure if you are the same him. You never know in these types of forums, our identities are so secret.
The old Q could really hit and block, but someone told me that the Q in this forum has great hands, and can pass pretty well, so I do not think we know each other.

The Roberts tourney, this Saturday, should be a good place to get a look at all the teams. If you can't make that one, there's always the Churchville tourney on Dec 28.
