I thought you were talking about girls. Dan must not have told me the truth about that "operation" last time I saw him. OH13, don't worry about the MVP thing. It's better than being the MVP of City-Catholic like me. All that means is that you hit a ball really hard in every game.

Queen of spades does make some valid points. College teams, whether at the d3, d2, or d1, level are made up of MVPs. Friends of mine, who coach college, constantly point out that most of the player resumes they receive are from MVPs. Nearly every high school in the States has a volleyball squad, so there truly is a lot of volleyball being played out there and at all different levels, so those accolades are taken with a grain of salt. These college coaches have found that one schools MVP wouldn't make another schools squad. The proof, for most collegiate coaches, is in the seeing and in the try outs. Sadly, a lot of potentially talented kids, find a "whole nuther animal in college." It's basically a situation where you quickly realize the value of a great attitude and a great work ethic. If a child is lucky enough to be recruited, then the work begins. There are no guarantees. You have to Earn your spot, Earn your playing time, and Earn your position. A lot of college coaches' jobs depend on their team being successful, so you have to prove yourself. The coaches can't afford to give you an opportunity to get in shape, gain your confidence, or get your game back, after a summer spent working a job and going to grad parties (and next year there can always be someone better around that corner). Do you have the courage to take on that challenge and face it without rancor, or self pity, or sorrow?
Additionally, you have to be seen, as the Queen noted there are times of the year, where coaches can't visit, due to NCAA rules. Go to the AVCA online site and you'll see how the American Volleyball Coaches Association policy is trying to fight this because there are kids in Rochester, who play in the winter, that they'd like to see. Not in Rochester, NY, but in Rochester, Minnesota. That's one of the areas of the country that being an MVP has some esteem.
The Queen mentions the Baltimore tourney and the Penn State tourney (You're lucky if you see Russ Rose [Penn's coach]- he barely attends his camps) as sites where you might see top shelf coaches. In this, she, too, is correct. You are likely to see a few topflight D1 coaches at these events. What you will see an abundance of, however, is CC, NAIA, D3 coaches, D2 coaches, & lower tier D1, probably East Coast schools. The big shots are at the Nationals, the Davis Festival, and probably all of the other National Qualifiers, save for Baltimore and Tampa.
And then, even if the NAIA coaches, CC coaches, or D3 coaches see you around here, you are still one among many. Take a look at the local college teams (recognize that our college teams are also working at getting National respect), & see that few Rochester kids make the starting lineups, and yes, that some of our all stars have been cut. Squads that are on the cusp of National success, like GCC & Nazareth, want to continue their success. They want more from the local schools. They want more talent, more skill, more experience, more heart, more effort & then they still might look elsewhere and recruit elsewhere.
Our boys situation is a whole nother animal. We've had boys seen at their high school matches. We've had a boy make the Jr. National team (what family was he in?). We've had boys make the junior development squads. Our girls are not yet at that level. In Rochester, beyond Tara Haefner (the setter who was a cornerstone in Tut's ride at Rush) and a few other of her colleagues, when they were young, I know we are lucky if we get 1 a decade.
And perhaps, that is where the dissatisfaction arises at the current level of play of our high school girls. No state tournament for the girls. No chance to prove themselves. No chance to improve & that creates other problems. Coaches and players evolve when challenged. I remember something Mike once said about steps that his program has taken. Entering a foundering program, he first had to find athletes and do a lot of teaching to succeed in the Private Parochial League. After taking that step, then the next step was to succeed in his class, then to succeed in his entire class. Now, he hopes to compete with Buffalo, & maybe someday to compete for a state title. So, he & his players are still motivated on improving throughout the season (difficult to do when Eden awaits with all those kids dedicated to club and school volleyball). It is too bad that Fairport and their rivals don't have this inspiration. What level of play could they be capable of playing? Interesting question, is it not?
I don't know if it is fair or not, because I haven't seen Fairport play much, but someone mentioned to me that some of Fairport's, Brockport's & some of the other programs, have players whose abilities haven't progressed much. I hear, "she was better (or just as good) as a sophomore. All she is now is a little older and stronger." I don't like hearing that. I hope it isn't true. But I guess I can understand that it is a possibility. If you are good enough to be an all star as a sophomore and then are not challenged, what do you rise to?
Me, I want to hear about the next Rochester girl who makes a jr. national camp. I am longing to hear of the first Gatorade player of the year coming from Rochester, like Ashley Doepp from Pierce's Eden program has done twice. Until that happens, where our programs can get that kind of notoriety and respect, the Queen again has a point, it is one thing to be proud of the work you and your squad are doing, it is another to get a bit carried away with it all.
Still and all, this season, as the others did is winding down. I hope the kids have improved. I hope they have also enjoyed the game, the matches, their friendships, and their memories. As adults know, high school sports are special, enjoy.

Hey, I hate to tell you this QueenofSpades, but if you think volleyball in high school means nothing, what is volleyball in college??? Granted you are playing with better players, but unless you honestly believe you are the next Gabriella Reese, which I doubt, volleyball in college won't mean much either. Do you honestly believe you will get a job in life because you were recognized with an award for being a college volleyball player???? If you are gonna look at this objectively, volleyball at any level doesn't matter much. It most likely won't make you much money, and won't support a family. It is done for the enjoyment. Putting people down, like OH13 just makes you rude. He won an award and should be very proud to be honored. Either you are jealous, or just want to make other people feel bad. I can't understand why. And club volleyball does get recognition, but some of the best players I have ever seen play the game, DON'T PLAY CLUB!!! I am not saying it isn't a good way to improve your skills and get in extra playing time, but you don't have to play club to be good. In fact I know a bunch of players who play club and aren't much better because of it! So I don't know why you feel like coming on here and putting everyone else down. Honors in high school mean a lot. They are recognizing the best players in the area. In life, they may not be extremely important, but fun and hard work will pay off by receiving awards!

You see... volleyball is like an orange when you peel off all the outer layers, there's something really juicy inside that everyone wants to eat. And you want to reach out and grab that orange but you can't do it because we live in New York and you can't grow oranges here. Instead we must settle for a lousy can of orange juice from concentrate and attempt to be content with that.

Queenie--get your nose back in joint. Somebody's just trying to get under your skin (and right now he's worming down your cerebral cortex). Honestly, both Fairport and Brockport have a ways to go in team skill level, so back off the smack and get to work on the court. As far as recruiting goes, Q is right for the boys. Recruiters regularly travel to see H.S. tournaments. The Men's collegiate season is in the winter and spring, so they can. Since the H.S. girls and collegiate women's seasons are occurring simultaneously, the lion's share of recruiting hapens during the club season. Still, we have had girls recruiting during the H.S. season as well. And Q is correct: coaches send out lots of "spies" to check out kids.

Most importantly, Queen, you are VERY wrong in your disparaging remarks about the high school season. It is a very significant experience and should NOT be seen as merely a pathway to bigger and better things (eg college ball). The growth AND cameraderie athletes experience through their hs playing years are unique in many ways. Many of my (and other coaches') players certainly look back on them with fondness and gratitude. OH-13, your award is anything but meaningless--it is a sign post of A LOT of hard work. Congrats!

Hey, are you a coach or a player? Or maybe a ref? I thought you went to Victor, but I wasn't sure. You don't mind answering questions, do you?

I'm betting against all of you. My bet is on that little team that no one is paying attention to right now but is secretly getting better and better and during sectionals will take one of these teams by surprise and kick their ass.

This team wouldn't happen to be Gates-Chili, would it?

There's a varsity tourney Monday, Jan. 20th. I believe that it's at St. John Fisher College.
